Ocean Currents

South African climate is dominate by two ocean currents
  • Benguela
  • Agulhas
The Agulhas current comes down the eastern shore from Madagascar. It is a warm current which mixes with the Benguela current at the southern tip of South Africa. The Benguela current, a cold current, comes north from the Antartic. The Benguela current makes it very difficult to sail southward along the South African coast. Similarly, it difficult to sail northward along the eastern coast.

The National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP) has an outstanding site on ocean currents. Their web site maintained at the University of Miami has an excellent discussion of the Agulhas and Benguela currents. Two diagrams of the currents from the Miami web site are presented below.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) has a good primer on ocean currents. A good weather site is maintained by the surf magazine ZigZag. Another good surfer site is Sufers Village.
